Personal statement:
I made pots and occasional ceramic sulptures for seventeen years, then in October 2006 I started working almost solely as a sculptor in a great variety of materials. I now make pots occasionally, keeping my hand in at this quiet, timeless skill, enjoying the simplicity of it. Sophia Hughes began in 1971 as a maker of thrown domestic ware in her free time, and became a full time potter in 1990 when she added handbuilt sawdust fired pots to her range. In 1999 she extended this, exploring with clay to high fired matt glazed abstract sculptures. Shw was coming back to the beginning as she had wanted to be a scultor in 1996 at the West of England College of Art, where she gained a 2:1 in painting and etching.1991 Beaux Arts, Bath
