Artists > Martin Roberts
Introduction
After nearly twenty years living and working in Switzerland, Martin Roberts now paints full time in Cornwall. He was trained at the Slade School under William Coldstream, Patrick George and Euan Uglow. Their influence remains profound but not restrictive. On leaving The Slade he was awarded a Boise travelling scholarship and spent a year painting in southern Spain.
Martin paints from a variety of subjects, mainly landscape, the figure and still life. The paintings are a journey of discovery in which marks, distances, lines and shapes can be seen to move as decisions are refined. The paintings are the result of many hours of careful looking and noticing. In particular, colour relationships are analysed with great care.
On returning from Spain, Cale Art in London held a one man show for Martin. He has since gone on to exhibit both in this country and abroad. Having spent six months of 1999 travelling and painting in France, Spain and Portugal, the sabbatical ended with a show in Estoril.
